Maria Mota

We are saddened to announce the loss of Maria Mota, beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who passed away on September 19th, 2025.

Born in Portugal on November 15th, 1929, Maria and her husband Arnaldo and daughter embarked on a journey to Canada that would shape not only her life but the lives of those she touched along the way. At an early age she pursued a dream to become a skilled tailor, enrolling in a tailor course in Portugal where she honed her craft and developed a passion for creating garments with precision and care.

The family later moved to Saskatoon where she continued her work as a tailor. Her dedication and exceptional skills quickly earned her a position working with a local tailor and later at Eatons. She was known for her meticulous work ethic and attention to detail. After years of service she retired, in fact, when she retired Eatons needed to hire two people to replace her - a true testament of her sewing skills.

Outside of her profession, maria found immense joy in her garden. Every summer her garden bloomed and she delighted in sharing her harvest with family and friends.

Maria was also a great Portuguese cook. The joy she brought to get togethers with friends and family with her cooking - making special foods for special occasions, taste testing together - created some beautiful memories.

Her grandchildren were her pride and joy. They never failed to bring a smile to her face and she was so proud of their accomplishments. She was always eager to hear how they were doing and she marvelled at how they managed to keep up with all their activities.

Her great grandchildren, all seven of them, brought her immense joy and she was always eager to hear about their lives and what they were up to.

Maria belonged to the Portuguese community and valued her friends there. She was always eager to celebrate the festivals they held.

Her love for her family was the greatest joy. She is survived by her daughter Adeline (Jon) Ashwin; two grandchildren, Jason Ashwin (Anna), Gemma, Ava, Noah, Jake; Kristin Zurevinski (Brad) Kendall, Sloane and Nova.

She will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, October 1st, 2025 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Parish in Saskatoon.
