Jan 5, 1962 — Jul 18, 2026

Some called her Sandra, most knew her as Sandi, but no matter the moniker, she was a fierce and lovable force, and if you were fortunate enough to meet her even once, you were referred to as friend from that moment forward.

Born to Phil and Rosina Hicke on January 5, 1962, she was the middle and the balance of the three ‘S’ sisters; Susan (Rod), Sandra (Peter), Sherry (Larry). After finishing school, Sandi went on to work for more than three decades as a Federal Public Servant; the bulk of her career with Parks Canada.

Sandi's love of the outdoors was nurtured early through countless family camping trips and road trips across Western Canada and into the United States. Those experiences sparked a lifelong passion for exploring new places and meeting new people, eventually landing Sandi on her beloved island of Barbados, where she met and married, the love of her life Peter, or Pi as many affectionately call him.

Following the end of her working career as a Public Servant, Sandi also retired from owning and wearing socks and closed-toed footwear. Sandra and Peter (Pi) embraced the best of both worlds, warm weather and flip flops, splitting their time between Canada (Saskatchewan and Ontario), and Barbados.

Whether in Canada or Barbados, Sandi was an exceptional cook and the ‘hostess with the mostest’, she had a gift for bringing people together over good food, good conversation and plenty of laughter. Her love for Barbados was infectious, and she proudly shared its beauty, culture, and people with anyone who would listen or visit. Many joked that she should have been named an honorary Ambassador for Barbados—a title she would have worn with pride.

Sandi loved hard, lived loud, and on occasion, maybe shouldn’t have been left unsupervised. Many “that’s a terrible idea” was met with a “hold my beer”, resulting in a story we will talk and laugh about for many years to come. Her sarcastic, teasing humor and one-liners, often ended in more belly laughs than might be deemed appropriate, but there was never a dull moment in the presence of this amazing human.

As Sandi never let the disease that took her, define her, this portion of the messaging will be brief. Her unwavering strength, no matter the odds, needs to be recognized and honored because it again speaks to the woman she will always be remembered as: optimistic, selfless, courageous. Diagnosed in May 2022 with a rare and aggressive form of breast cancer, she was a pink ribbon warrior like no other, and although she eventually lost the war, she never gave up the fight.

In addition to her adoring husband of 18 years, Peter (Pi) Bayne, Sandi leaves to mourn both her Canadian and Barbadian families, and friends who were considered family, that are far too numerous to name, but you know who you are and how much Sandi loved you.

The loss of Sandi will create a very large void for so many, but the memories are as vast as her love, her spirit, her soul. In the words of the one song Sandi chose in tribute to herself and as message to us all: (See You Again, Wiz Khalifa featuring Charlie Puth)

“It’s been a long day without you, my friend
And I’ll tell you all about it when I see you again
We’ve come a long way from where we began
Oh, I’ll tell you all about it when I see you again
When I see you again”
